If you're lucky enough you're lawn is growing on rich top soil, much of the hard work of keeping a lawn beautiful has been completed. There are many, of course, to whom this does not apply, and besides, even with a good topsoil base, there is yet the requirement for labor to keep a beautiful lawn and garden.

1. The best time to mow a lawn is when observation suggests that coolness and dryness exists. Wait for the morning dew to dry off, and before the afternoon heat takes hold. An alternative plan is to do this late on in the afternoon, or early on in the evening this should follow a water application when it was morning, which is a fine time as well.

2. Preference should be given to a hedge than the qualities provided by fencing. A more private provision is catered for, keep pets and children in or out. Birds will be attracted because of its sheltering properties, and privision is made for a setting that will enhance flowers and plants.

3. Your garden should be brought right up to you; plant hyacinths near walkways and doors. The scented, perfumed air they produce will take over the atmosphere ofspring and will enhance your garden in ways you didn't think possible.

4. Bring you garden to the things that don't belong in a garden, lamp posts and mail boxes being an example. Surround these items with flowers planted to gain an advantageous benefit the earliest to the latest flowerings. You may wish to see snowdrops, white in color, crocuses of a purple or gold hue, tulips of a variety of colors, and hyacinths colored blue. Rocks and boulders should be placed at the base of the posts which will give better interest to the items.

5. Uncomplicated control of weeds can be achieved on your lawn by making spring the time to mow regularly. This will prevent dandelions spreading through the elimination of the blossoms which are yellow as well as the formation of seeds being prevented. Mow high during late spring and early summer. Grass blades can thereby be allowed to shade the ground, and will help prevent crabgrass from sprouting.

Your very own lawn, as well as your garden should be a source of pride and beauty. The expense of considerable sums is unecessary on expensive fertilizers and herbicides, or fancy lawn furniture and ornaments. Some careful preplanning will take you as far as you need to go to making your lawn and garden a space that you prefer.
