If you're lucky enough to have a lawn with a good topsoil base, the toil and labor of beautifying your lawn need not cause you any worries. This, however, does not apply to everyone, and besides, when a fine topsoil base exists, the need to put in effort still exists to keep in excellent condition, you lawn and garden.

1. The optimum moment to have a lawn mowed is when it is cool and dry. Wait for the morning dew to dry off, before the heat of the afternoon is on you. Or you may wish to perform this act early in the evening, or late in the afternoon there having been water sprayed on when it was morning, which is a fine time as well.

2. Preference should be given to a hedge than a fence. The provision for privacy is superior, keeping little ones and family animals secure on either side. It is likely to attract birds due to the way it provides shelter for them, and it will give a setting that will enhance flowers and plants.

3. Your garden should be brought right up to you; hyacinths can be planted near doors and near paths. The heady perfumed smell will take over the atmosphere ofspring and will enhance your garden in ways you didn't think possible.

4. Brighten up mundane items, lamp posts and mail boxes being an example. Surround these items with flowers planted to benefit from the earliest to the latest flowerings. You may wish to see snowdrops, white in color, purple and gold crocus, tulips of a variety of colors, and hyacinths colored blue. Rocks and boulders should be placed at the base of the posts to enhance their appearance.

5. The control of weeds may take place on the environs of your lawn by mowing often during spring. The effect that will be achieved is the suppression of the spread of dandelions through the elimination of the blossoms which are yellow and stopping seeds to form. Late spring and early summer is the time to mow high. The ground will be shaded by grass blades with this maneouvre, and the sprouting of crabgrass will also be prevented from happening.

Your very own lawn, as well as your garden is expected to be somewhere that your pride and your creation's beauty shines through. Money in quantities need not be spent on expensive fertilizers and herbicides, or either chairs and tables, or statues, etc for the lawn. Some careful preplanning can go a long way to making your lawn and garden a much better place.
